error macro
/ˈɛr.ər ˈmæk.roʊ/
noun · glitch lore
The rumor of the Mortal Kombat character Ermac began with a diagnostics screen in the original 1992 arcade game,
where “ERMACS” (short for “error macro”) appeared as a coding log by co-creator Ed Boon. Players mistook it for
a secret character due to its placement alongside stats for hidden fighter Reptile. This led fans to speculate
about the existence of a ninja named Ermac, even though no such character had ever been seen. In Mortal Kombat
II, a scrambled message in the game's ending cryptically stated “Ermac does not exist,” further fueling the
mystery. Though Boon and Midway never outright confirmed or denied Ermac’s existence, the character had become
such a persistent urban legend that he was officially added to the playable roster in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
In 2011, Boon revealed that the original ERMACS listing was deliberately left ambiguous to stir fan speculation.
Yet even now, whispers persist in corners of the fan community—was Ermac merely born of myth, or was there
something more hiding in the code, waiting to be found?
